Valuations are imperative to the Collections Management process. If you do not know what the current values of your objects are, it is highly likely that your unique collection, in which you have invested many years of passion, is not insured against a disaster.

The Collections Management process will help you meet your responsibilities as a custodian and provide you with a system that will ensure each object has a current value. Potential disasters aside, doing so will allow you to make informed decisions about the appropriate levels of insurance coverage for the objects in your collection. In addition it will assist you in deciding the direction of your collection or individual objects contained within it.

Regular valuations are critical to the management of your collection. A crucial part of protecting your collection, in which you have invested, is ensuring you know the current values of the objects.

In line with industry standards, Artcell can help you establish the market values for objects in your collection.

Collectors can also benefit from our experience with the Federal Government’s tax incentives for culturally significant gifts to Australia’s public collections. For more information visit the Cultural Gift Programm – Tax Incentives website

TIPS

Works of art on paper are safest when stored in a horizontal position. Continue reading →

Monitor storage areas and observe artworks regularly for signs of potential damage or problems. Signs to look for include:

yellowing, browning or general discolouration

fading paper or pigments

brittleness

mold growth

spreading corrosion

flaking paint

cockling

staining

condensation or water stains underneath frame

curling or parallel cracks in paper

Observe and document the current condition of all objects/artworks so that any subsequent physical or structural changes can be easily identified.

Provide sound support for objects at all times. This applies to both objects on display and artworks in storage.

Works of art on paper are usually safest when stored in a horizontal position.

Avoid overcrowding files or boxes with works of art.

Be aware of the physical environment an artwork is stored or exhibited in. Frequent changes in temperature and relative humidity can cause irreparable damage to objects and accelerate deterioration.

When moving artworks, correct handling procedures ensure safety during transit. Objects should be held with two hands at all times, above or just below the widest part. Hands should be clean, or alternatively, gloves should be worn.

Maintaining and reassessing storage is essential in ensuring the safety of stored artworks. Storage areas should be cleaned regularly, and kept as free as possible from dust and other airborne particles. Dust is abrasive, and if left unattended, can settle into an artwork and contribute to mold growth.

Control exposure to intense light, and limit duration of exposure. Light, both natural and artificial, is damaging to most objects. Exposure to natural light should be kept to a minimum, and unnecessary artificial light avoided.

Lights in storage areas should be turned off when not in use.

Having a complete record of all items and artworks in a collection ensures easy access and identification. Ideally, each individual item would be provided with a permanent accession ID or number, cross-indexed by location and type of artifact. Individual identification numbers make it easier to locate an item.
